In a magnificent cricketing spectacle at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, former Indian cricketer, Ravi Shastri was thoroughly impressed by Glenn Maxwell's extraordinary performance against Afghanistan.

Ravi Shastri draws parallels between Maxwell's blitz and Kapil Dev's epic 1983 innings

The match played on Tuesday saw Australia in a dismal position, languishing at 91/7 in 18.3 overs while pursuing a challenging target of 292 set by Afghanistan.

Maxwell, known for his explosive batting, rose to the occasion, scoring an unbeaten 201 off just 128 balls. His innings, filled with 21 fours and 10 sixes, turned the tide in Australia's favour. The highlight of his performance was a crucial 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins, who contributed a vital 12 runs off 68 balls.

Shastri, who has witnessed many remarkable innings throughout his career, couldn't help but draw parallels between Maxwell's knock and that of Kapil Dev's historic innings in the 1983 World Cup.

Leading the Indian team, Kapil had faced a similar situation against Zimbabwe at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Wells. With India reeling at 17/5, the legendary all-rounder had unleashed an unbeaten 175 off 138 balls, featuring 16 fours and six sixes, guiding India to a remarkable 31-run victory.

Taking to Twitter, Shastri expressed his admiration for Maxwell's innings, stating, "Stunning. Reminds me of Kaps of 83." This comparison highlighted the significance of Maxwell's performance in the context of cricketing heroics.

Meanwhile, Maxwell, reflecting on his match-winning innings, acknowledged his previous missed opportunities in similar situations. Expressing satisfaction, he noted the importance of capitalizing on the chance and his pride in securing the win alongside captain Cummins.

Australia's three-wicket win has propelled them into the semi-finals of the tournament. Their next and final league game is slated against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune on Saturday, November 11, where they will aim to continue their winning streak.
