Josh Tongue has backed England to chase down their remaining 350 runs against India on Day 5 of the Headingley Test. Chasing a steep target of 371 runs, English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett reached 21-0 from six overs by stumps on Day 4.
Tongue, who has claimed seven wickets in the match, fired the warning to India by doubling down on England’s fearless ‘BazBall’ approach, asserting that the team remains fully committed to chasing down the target with intent and aggression.
Josh Tongue Says England Plotting Record Run-Chase
The English team is already plotting a record run-chase against Indian bowlers ahead of Day 5, as revealed by home pacer Josh Tongue. With 350 more runs required and all their 10 wickets intact, the Englishmen will once again be aiming to employ their ‘BazBall’ routine.
As quoted by Cricbuzz, Tongue said:
“Just go for the win. That’s the clear message in the changing room.”
Josh Tongue played a crucial role in keeping England’s target down to 371 runs after splendid centuries from Indian opener KL Rahul and blistering wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.
By taking the wickets of all-rounder Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah; Tongue cleaned up the Indian tail as the visitors had their entire second innings enveloped for 364 despite reaching 333-4 at one stage of Day 4. Brydon Carse also picked up three wickets, which included the prized scalps of Shubman Gill and centurion KL Rahul.
England now need 350 more runs to win from 90 overs on Day 5, with a required rate of just below four runs an over.
It is worth noting that the Ben Stokes-led team pulled off a 378-run heist against India in Birmingham the last time these two sides played a Test match in England back in July 2022.
