In a significant development, Indian wicket-keeper batter and Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson is all set to feature in the upcoming season of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL). The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) governing council chairman Nazir Machan confirmed on Monday that Samson has officially signed up for the KCL player auction scheduled for July 5.

According to the reports of Sportstar, Samson, who had only been the brand ambassador of the KCL during its inaugural edition in 2024, will finally take the field in his home state’s franchise T20 league. He joins a strong pool of 39 elite players in Category A, which also features Kerala Ranji captain Sachin Baby and emerging IPL star Vignesh Puthur.

“A source in the KCA said the wicketkeeper batter has registered for the KCL auction, declaring his willingness to participate in the franchise league, which is expected to take place ahead of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season,” the report stated.

IPL 2025: A Season To Forget For Samson

Leading the RR, Sanju Samson’s IPL 2025 season was disrupted by a finger fracture early on, limiting him to the role of Impact Player. A subsequent abdominal injury sidelined him further, opening the door for 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

Samson was later demoted to the No. 3 position, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryavanshi opening the innings. He managed just one fifty in the entire season and made 285 runs in 9 matches, with an average of 35.62 and strike-rate of 140.39. 

For Sanju Samson, the KCL will be chance to regain fitness.His presence is also expected to attract significant fanfare and viewership, bringing national attention to the tournament.

Rules For KCL 2025

As per KCA guidelines, teams heading into the auction can retain a maximum of four players, of which three can be capped. Teams that do not exercise the retention option will receive a Right-To-Match (RTM) card, which can be used during the auction to reclaim players.

The deadline for player retentions is June 30 at 5 PM IST, and every franchise will operate with Rs. 50 lakh auction purse. The teams are required to form a squad of minimum 16 and maximum 20 players.
