In a recent interaction, Indian batter KL Rahul spoke candidly about Shubman Gill's challenging stint in Test cricket and expressed confidence in the young cricketer's ability to bounce back.

Gill, facing criticism for his tentative approach against England's bowling attack in the ongoing first Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, experienced a challenging outing.

Despite a valiant effort to defend in the last hour of Day 1, Gill's stay at the crease on Day 2 was cut short, as he departed for 23 runs off 66 balls, playing false shots and appearing out of rhythm.

Reflecting on Gill's recent form, Rahul acknowledged the drop in his average to around 28, and the scrutiny surrounding his place in the team. Despite the dip in numbers, the senior pro remained steadfast in his belief in Gill's capabilities, emphasizing the inherent challenges of Test cricket.

"Shubman Gill walked into a situation where he had to defend his way to the end of the day's play. Sometimes when you get into a mindset like that, you might find it hard to break free. Even today he wanted one shot just to break the shackles to make him feel good," Rahul remarked, shedding light on the mental pressure Gill faced on the field.

"Like I said, he will get better. He is a top-class cricketer. We’ve seen that in white-ball cricket. It’s about time that he learn from it," he added.

The acknowledgment of Gill's proficiency in playing spin in white-ball cricket hinted at the potential for improvement in the red-ball format.

Gill's form in Test cricket has been under scrutiny, with his last half-century dating back to his impressive ton against Australia in Ahmedabad earlier this year. Rahul, however, remains optimistic about Gill's potential, urging him to bring his white-ball dominance to the red-ball format.
