Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has urged the national selectors to take a note of fast bowler Mohammed Shami in Ranji Trophy cricket. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President believes that Shami deserves to be in the Indian team as he seems to be on top of his fitness.

It is worth noting that the legendary paceman has not played a single international match for Team India since the conclusion of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy back in March this year, and not a single Test since June 2023 against Australia.

Sourav Ganguly hails Mohammed Shami, says his “skill is enormous”

While speaking with the reporters during an event in Kolkata, former India captain and active CAB President Sourav Ganguly praised fast bowler Mohammed Shami for his fiery wicket-taking spree in the ongoing 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season.

Struggling to his return to international cricket citing “injury concerns”, Ganguly said that Shami seems to be on top of his fitness, and the speedster deserves to play all three formats for Team India. He added:

“Mohammed Shami is great, he’s bowling exceptionally well. You saw in the 2-3 Ranji trophy matches where he's won Bengal on his own. I'm sure the selectors are watching. I'm sure there is a communication between Shami and selectors, I don't know. But if you ask me in terms of fitness and skill, it's Mohammed Shami we know of. So I really don't see any reason why he can't be playing test matches, ODIs or T20Is for India because that skill is enormous.”

Ajit Agarkar, chairman of BCCI’s current selection committee, earlier explained Mohammed Shami’s exclusion from Team India citing “fitness concerns”, a claim the fast bowler himself later quashed.

However, early in November this month, a senior BCCI official reportedly claimed that the selection committee “was desperate to get” Mohammed Shami on board for the England tour, and even had the sports science team examining his fitness.

As of now, it remains to be seen as to when Mohammed Shami will receive his due national recall for Team India.
