The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners convened at the BCCI headquarters on Wednesday night to discuss the upcoming season. The meeting covered several key topics, with the mega auctions being the most significant. However, an argument arose over the necessity of a mega auction for IPL 2025.

According to Cricbuzz, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) co-owner Shah Rukh Khan argued against hosting a mega auction, proposing a smaller auction instead.

This led to a heated exchange with Punjab Kings (PBKS) co-owner Ness Wadia. Despite the disagreement, Shah Rukh Khan found an ally in Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner Kavya Maran.

Maran, in a statement to Cricbuzz after the meeting, expressed her opposition to the mega auction.

"It takes a lot of time to build a squad and as discussed it also takes quite a bit of time and investment for the younger players to mature. It has taken Abhishek Sharma three years to become consistent with his performances. You would agree that there are many such examples in other teams too," she said.

The PBKS, in contrast to KKR, had a disappointing season in 2024, finishing ninth with only five wins in 14 matches.

Ahead of the meeting, there were discussions among the franchises about allowing up to eight retentions before the mega auction. Additionally, there were suggestions to reintroduce the Right to Match (RTM) option, which was removed in 2022 after two new teams joined the tournament.
