Harry Brook faces a potential two-year ban from the IPL after withdrawing from the 2025 season, marking his second consecutive exit. Under updated IPL rules, players who pull out without approved medical or family reasons face exclusion from the league and its auctions until 2027.

Brook, acquired for INR 6.25 crore, cited the need to “recharge” following an intense career phase, a decision relayed via the ECB. His absence disrupts Delhi’s squad dynamics amid the league’s stricter stance on late withdrawals.

Moeen Ali On Impact Of Brook's Withdrawal

Brook, a frontrunner for England’s white-ball captaincy, prioritizes rest ahead of a critical 12-month schedule, including a home Test series against India and the Ashes. The IPL’s tightened regulations, shaped by franchise feedback, aim to curb recurring withdrawals, a trend Brook has now followed twice.

Moeen Ali, the ex-England cricketer opined on IPL's stance on the potential ban. Moeen spoke elaborately on the Beard Before Cricket podcast regarding Brook’s potential ban.

“It’s not harsh though, I kinda agree with it. A lot of people do that. People have done it in the past, and then they come back in and end up getting a better financial package or whatever it is. It kinda messes up a lot of things as well at the same time.”

Moeen emphasized the logistical strain on franchises and the impact on teams which lose potential star players just ahead of the season. Notably, DC will face a challenge without Brook as they will scout for new combinations for a stronger batting lineup.

“It’s messed his team up, him pulling out. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they’ve got to now rejig everything and stuff like that. Forget him for a second, if you do pull out, the rule is you get a ban, unless it’s a family reason or injury. If it’s injury, it’s different. But I think if you just pull out, then it’s… I kinda agree with it.”

Brook’s Captaincy Prospects and Workload Management

Brook, who withdrew from the 2024 IPL following his grandmother’s passing, reiterated his need for a mental and physical break ahead of England’s packed calendar. Moeen however, shared that he might have just wanted some rest before the long English summer.

“With him, he’s played a lot of cricket; he’s probably just thinking a little bit of a rest. There’s a big summer coming up, a big 12 months coming up. England do play a lot though. He plays all forms, he’s probably going to be captain of the white-ball side as well.”

However, with no official sanction yet, Brook’s future in the IPL remains uncertain, but the precedent set by the league’s new rules signals a harder line against non-compliance of overseas players.
