After the Indian Premier League was introduced to the cricket world, fans got another reason to experience the unreal T20 thrills. Since its inaugural season in 2008, it has undergone significant changes and become increasingly exciting over time.
As the league is set to take a step towards another new chapter, former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has come up with a massive suggestion. Suggesting a bold change, Uthappa wanted IPL to be played over six months.
Uthappa calls for the IPL to break boundaries
There was a time when the cricket world used to thrive with the excitement of red-ball cricket, but once the T20 format was introduced, the spotlight shifted to the shortest format. At that point, the introduction of the IPL was a game-changing feat. With the time, the tournament went through a transformation and emerged as one of the biggest T20 giants worldwide.
After IPL became one of the leading T20 leagues, former Indian player Robin Uthappa came up with some bold suggestions. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he urged the league to move beyond its start-up phase and evolve into an even bigger, more polished product.
“They are not taking it beyond the start-up stage. It is baffling. You are the leading cricket league in the world. Mature now. Just get on with it. Stop with the auctions and keep the trade window open throughout the year. Have a draft and get rid of the auctions. For crying out loud, get rid of the auctions. I have been saying this even when I was playing,” he said.
Uthappa pushes for an expanded IPL season
Every Indian summer has been special after IPL came to the cricket arena, as fans now enjoy two and a half months of unreal T20 thrills. Asking for a major overhaul, Robin Uthappa wanted the league to go bigger with a six-month season complete with a draft system and a year-round trade window for maximum excitement.
“They are not going beyond the entertainment mindset, for TV. Even a draft can be great TV. You will get your fans engaging and create fan loyalty. Just get it going. I think it should be like a six-month league. You can have international fixtures in between. It has to evolve,” he added.
After a trade window full of jaw-dropping twists, all eyes now shift to the blockbuster IPL 2026 auction. The high-voltage auction for the IPL 2026 has been set for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, as teams will be desperate to pick a mighty squad ahead of the upcoming season.
