"It Brings Maturity..." Shreyas Iyer Thrives In Leadership Role Amid India Captaincy Buzz

It would not be wrong to say that Shreyas Iyer is enjoying one of the most prolific and influential phases of his career both as a batsman and as a captain. After leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to their first IPL final in over a decade, Iyer has continued his golden run in leadership by guiding the Sobo Mumbai Falcons into the semi-finals of the T20 Mumbai League 2025.

Shreyas Iyer Embraces Captaincy

With this, he further improved his reputation as a natural leader and potential future captain of India’s white-ball team. Shreyas Iyer reflecting on his recent success and growing stature as a leader said :

"It (captaincy) brings in a lot of maturity and responsibility," Iyer said amid all-round appreciation of his leadership skills since the IPL started. There are even speculations that he could, potentially, be India's next white ball captain while a call-up for the the Test series in England is also a possibility as quoted by Cricbuzz. 

Iyer’s consistency and temperament have drawn attention, with increasing speculation that he could be a strong candidate to lead India in white-ball formats in the near future.

"You are always expected to perform and contribute in the best way possible for the team because whenever there is a hurdle or some kind of adversity you face as a team, they always come to the captain. I think I have got a lot of experience as I have been captaining since I was 22. I have enjoyed the moments and also embraced it. I love the fact that I can come out and lead," Iyer said.

Coming off an impressive IPL season, Iyer joined the Sobo Falcons straight after the IPL final in Ahmedabad on June 3. He did not skip a beat and has since led his Mumbai franchise from the front. 

The semi-finals of the T20 Mumbai League will be played at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, followed by the grand final on Thursday. In the first semi-final Eagle Thane Strikers will face Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals. While in the second semi-final, Sobo Mumbai Falcons will face Bandra Blasters.
