Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav made a staggering remark on India's painstaking defeat in the ICC World Cup 2023 final against Australia held on Sunday (November 19).

As the nation continues to mourn the gutwrenching six-wicket loss to the Aussies, the Samajwadi Party chief claimed if the final had been played in Lucknow instead of Ahmedabad, the result would've fallen in India's favour.

Speaking at a political rally in Etawah in UP, Akhilesh said Men in Blue would've enjoyed greater blessings of the gods and goddesses had the summit clash been hosted by Lucknow and not the Gujarat city of Ahmedabad, which is the den of the central government led by Bhartiya Janta Party.

Akhilesh comments on Ahmedabad as World Cup Final host

Akhilesh said Team India missed out on "blessings of Lord Vishnu" and curiously former BJP chief and ex-India PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was the former MP from Lucknow, with the World Cup final being held in Ahmedabad instead.

"The match (World Cup 2023 final) that took place in Gujarat, if it had happened in Lucknow, they (team India) would have got blessings of so many," Akhilesh said in a clip posted by ANI.

"If the match had happened there (Lucknow), team India would have got the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Atal Bihari Vajpayee and India would have won...now it can be heard that there was some issue with the pitch."

With the next Lok Sabha Elections scheduled for early 2024, Akhilesh tried to politic a gain on BJP with the cricketing reference based on India's disappointing loss to Australia. Notably, Ahmedabad successfully hosted an unprecedented 1,30,000 crowd for the marquee fixture at its iconic Narendra Modi Stadium while Lucknow's Ekana Stadium hosted five matches of the league stage in the World Cup.
