Marking a new beginning in the Test arena, Team India is set to face England in the upcoming Test series under Shubman Gill’s leadership. Following Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from Tests, Gill has stepped up to lead the side, ready to mark a new era.

While many raised eyebrows over Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s new Test captain, citing his limited experience, Shikhar Dhawan threw his weight behind the youngster, calling him a 'Great Choice’.

Dhawan Stands Firm Behind Gill

After former Team India skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format, the team management was in search of a potential leader. After careful consideration of skills, experience, and leadership skills, Shubman Gill was chosen as Rohit’s successor. But that announcement sparked mixed reactions as a major group of people questioned Gill's potential to be India’s next Test skipper.

As the world was judging the new Test skipper of India, former Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan backed Gill for his new role. While hailing the youngster as a ‘great choice,’ Dhawan backed Gill, saying he is more than ready to excel in his new leadership role. As quoted by India Today, Dhawan said,

“I feel it's a great choice. Shubman has performed really well in the IPL recently. He is a great talent and has matured — he’s been playing for the Indian team for several years now. I feel he’s the perfect candidate to take on the Test captaincy, and I’m sure he will handle it well and lead the team together. This is the new generation now — Gen Z — and I’m confident he’ll do a great job. All my best wishes to him.’

Gill’s Journey In The Whites So Far

From domestic hero and U-19 star to India’s Test ace, Shubman Gill has seamlessly transitioned into the longest format. After making his debut in whites against Australia in 2020, he established himself as a dependable batter in Team India’s lineup. In 32 Tests, he scored 1893 runs, along with 5 centuries and 7 half-centuries with an average of 35.05.

But in the upcoming Test series against England, Gill will step into a new arena of his Test career. On English soil, he is all set to take on the captaincy reins, marking a new era. As Team India is set to face England in the first Test on June 20, fans are eagerly waiting to see a classic captaincy debut of Shubman Gill at Headingley.
