Shardul Thakur picked four wickets in the third ODI vs WI (Twitter)
Indian all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, who is under consideration for the World Cup 2023 squad, has asserted his focus on contributing to the team's success rather than worrying about his place in the team’s lineup for the marquee event.
Thakur's focus on team over self amid World Cup speculation
In a recent press conference following India's 2-1 victory in the ODI series against West Indies, Thakur emphasized his role as an all-rounder and his desire to contribute to all aspects of the game.
Thakur acknowledged the importance of his role in the team's success. He understands that in crucial situations, like longer chases or setting big targets, accelerating the innings may result in losing a wicket or two. Hence, the contributions of players like him at the No. 8 and No. 9 positions, who can bat deep and still score runs, become crucial.
"As an all-rounder who bats in the lower order, my role also becomes important. If the No. 8 and No.9 can contribute with someone who has batted deep, that role is really important,” said Thakur.
Thakur's performance in the series against the West Indies, especially with the ball, was outstanding. He managed to finish as the leading wicket-taker of the series, claiming eight wickets at an impressive average of 11.62.
The 31-year-old mentioned that whenever he gets an opportunity to play, his main focus is to contribute to the team's success, regardless of whether it's through batting, bowling, or fielding.
"Whenever I get an opportunity, I just try and contribute towards the team's success. I'm not the kind of player who plays for his place in the team. If I play with that thought, I don't think I'll be able to play,” added the pacer.
Thakur also stated that even if the team management decides not to pick him for the World Cup, he understands it's their decision, and he cannot do much about it.
The Mumbai-based cricketer added that he doesn't dwell on the thought of playing just to retain his place; instead, he looks to assess the match situation and fulfill the team's requirements.
"Even if they [team management] don't pick me for the World Cup, it will be their call, I can't do much. It will be wrong of me to think that I need to play for my place, that I'll do my job and leave," concluded Thakur.
