Former England captain Michael Vaughan has showered praise on India’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, calling him “the greatest bowler that I’ve ever seen” during a recent episode of the BBC 5 Live Sports podcast.
Vaughan lauded Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional skill across all formats and singled out his leadership during India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 campaign in Australia as one of the finest captaincy performances he has witnessed.
Vaughan Showers Praise For Bumrah
Speaking the BBC Podcast, Vaughan heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah while also acknowledging his presence and leadership in BGT 2024-25.
“Jasprit Bumrah is the greatest bowler that I've ever seen. He's an incredible bowler across all formats. Some of those spells that we saw in Australia and the way he led India in Perth. He blew Australia away not only with his spell but also with his captaincy. So one of the greatest performances of a captain I have seen is of Jasprit Bumrah,” Vaughan said.
Notably, Bumrah’s performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy was outstanding. He claimed 32 wickets in 9 innings at a remarkable average of 13.06.
Vaughan Highlights Root-Bumrah Matchup
Vaughan further highlighted the intriguing contest between Bumrah and England’s batting mainstay Joe Root.
“You are looking at that match-up between Jasprit Bumrah and Joe Root and if you look at Root's career I cannot really think of another bowler that I have looked and thought, ‘Oh Joe’s struggled against.’ So if there’s one bowler who got some wool over England's greatest eyes, it is Jasprit Bumrah,” Vaughan concluded.
As India prepares to face England in a five-match Test series starting June 20, 2025, Bumrah’s fitness and participation remain topics of speculation. While he is expected to be a key figure in India’s pace attack, it is not yet confirmed whether he will play all five Tests. He might feature in only 3 Tests as per reports.
Bumrah has been managing fitness concerns and workload carefully, especially given the demanding English conditions. Nonetheless, his record against England is formidable — he has taken 60 wickets in 14 Tests against them, including 37 wickets in 9 matches played in England.
