Following a memorable comeback from being 57/5 after the powerplay in the first innings, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) recorded their 7th win in 10 games in the Indian Premier League 2024 as they defeated hosts, Mumbai Indians (MI) in their own backyard by 24 runs. KKR skipper, Shreyas Iyer stressed how important this win was for finishing in the top 2.

After being 57/5, impact sub, Manish Pandey finally got a game and he stabilised the ship alongside the Player of the Match, Venkatesh Iyer. They stitched an 83-run stand which helped KKR finish at 169.

While defending the score, Mitchell Starc looked brilliant for his 4/33 in 3.5 overs while the mystery-spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine had identical figures of 2/22 in their four overs. Andre Russell chipped in with a couple of wickets as well.

Reflecting on the importance of the win, Iyer asserted on being at the touching distance of qualifying,

"We are [knocking at the door] at the moment. Just talked to Starc and we discussed that a lot of thinking would have gone behind if we had lost today. We would've had to win two out of four. Beautiful victory, hope we could've cherished this but we have a match day after."

On sending out Manish Pandey as an impact substitute when they were 57/5, Iyer talked about how eager Pandey was to get an opportunity since day 1. He also credited Venkatesh Iyer's effort with the bat.

"Certainly, this impact player rule, it has helped us in this game. Manish has been eyeing an opportunity from game 1. Today he got it and he capitalized on it. Fantastic to see him build the partnership with Venky who was phenomenal as well, he is someone who can change the course of the game."

"We got a commendable total. All I had to tell the boys was that we can defend it and that's what we did."

Talking about KKR's spinners performance, he lauded their execution of the plan fantastically, calling them "Unreal" for showing the character.

Up next, KKR will visit Lucknow to face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday evening.
