Half-centurion Venkatesh Iyer played starring role with the bat upfront before Mitchell Starc demolished Mumbai Indians’ lower-order with a three-wicket burst.

Mumbai Indians paceman Nuwan Thushara got the new-ball swinging at the top as he accounted for the early dismissals of KKR opener Phil Salt and middle-order batters Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Shreyas Iyer inside the first three overs of the innings.

KKR’s troubles worsened further with Sunil Narine and Rinku Singh’s subsequent dismissals at the hands of Hardik Pandya and Piyush Chawla respectively as they reached 57-5 in 6.1 overs.

Forming forces at 57-5, KKR number five Venkatesh Iyer and perennial underachiever Manish Pandey employed counterattacking approach. They added 83 runs to KKR’s total together, with Venkatesh top-scoring in the innings through a belligerent 52-ball 70.

Pandey also thwarted Mumbai Indians attack with precision through a well-compiled 42 from 31 balls.

After removing KKR tailenders Ramandeep Singh and Mitchell Starc, Bumrah splayed Venkatesh’s stumps with searing pace to wrap up the visitor’s innings for 169.

Defending 170, Mitchell Starc led KKR’s bowling charge by flattening Ishan Kishan’s leg stump with a 142kph thunderbolt in his opening spell. Emboldened by the early strike, spinner Varun Chakravarthy bewildered Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma, while T20 expat Sunil Narine accounted for dangermen Rohit Sharma and Nehal Wadhera.
