The journey of a fast bowler is filled with challenges, especially for those with a highly flexible body prone to frequent injuries. This consistently impedes their performance, leading to missed opportunities on the field.

In the career of fast bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar, the narrative echoes a familiar tune — more misses than hits in matches for India. Notably, injuries have kept him out of big events, including the World Cup.

Coming off a challenging period in his personal life, and injuries, Chahar is now ready to make a comeback on the international scene. He is also aiming for a spot in the national squad for the upcoming T20I World Cup 2024.

Speaking to PTI in a recent interview, Chahar talked about his plans of making a comeback to the Indian team, while emphasising the demand for a bowler who can chip in with the bat and rack up some runs. He's confident he can fill that role at positions 7, 8, or 9.

Here’s what Deepak Chahar said:

“I have missed two (T20) World Cups because of my injuries. If I was fully fit, I would have been a part of the World Cup team as well. In any scenario or (in) any team combination, there is always a requirement for a bowler who can bat at No. 7, 8, 9. I have done that and scored runs for the Indian team.”

Towards the end of last year, Chahar had a series of tough breaks, leading to him missing out on India's tour of South Africa and the Afghanistan series as well. Further, his dad suffered a brain stroke, but he is back on his feet now.

Reflecting on the tough times and missing on opportunities, here’s what Chahar stated:

“For me, my father comes first. I am here only because of him. Whatever I have achieved is because of my father. If I am not there for him in those situations, then obviously, what kind of son am I?”

The CSK all-rounder has played 25 T20Is so far, in which he has picked up 31 wickets, with an average of 24.10,  and a best individual figure of 6/7.
