West Indies paceman Shamar Joseph engineered a historic Test victory for his side against Australia on Day 4 of their second Test match at The Gabba. The 24-year-old speedster snapped up seven Australian wickets in the series-decider to finish with eight for the match and 13 across both Tests to bag the ‘Player of the Series’ award.

Joseph soon became the talk of the cricketing town owing to his splendid match-defining spell, one which yielded West Indies their first Test triumph in Australia in nearly three decades.

Former South African captain AB de Villiers also joined the bandwagon by expressing his admiration for the young Guyana-based fast bowler. The legendary Proteas batsman took to X (formerly Twitter) and described Joseph’s performance a “fairytale” one against the reigning WTC winners.

AB de Villiers hails ‘Shamar Joseph fairytale’

Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers praised Shamar Joseph after the latter unfurled a match-defining spell against WTC winners Australia at the iconic Brisbane venue. Taking to the microblogging site, the 39-year-old wrote:

Remarkably, Shamar Joseph made his international debut through the series, and claimed a sizzling five-wicket haul at the Adelaide Oval in the first innings of his international career earlier in January.

While his five-fer was tendered fruitless owing to West Indies’ crushing 10-wicket defeat, the speedster one-upped his efforts in the subsequent series-decider against a strong Australian line-up.

Defending a mere 216 to level the series, Joseph single-handedly jolted the Australian juggernaut by reducing them from 113-2 to 136-6 in a space of a few overs. He also polished off the Australian tail and kept them eight runs down from their target to secure a historic Test win for his country.
