In a heart-to-heart conversation with fellow teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, Indian cricketer KL Rahul disclosed his biggest regret from the night of the 2023 ODI World Cup finals held in Ahmedabad, saying that had he played a little deeper, the results could have been much different.

On the evening of 19th November 2023, millions of hearts broke across the country as India lost the 2023 ODI World Cup finals to Australia despite being an undefeated side throughout the tournament.

India batted first, and despite Rohit Sharma’s blazing start, the middle order succumbed to pressure as the hosts could only manage to put 250 runs on board.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul who played a 107-ball 66 runs innings on the eve of the finals, recently revealed that he regretted getting dismissed early.

In a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin, Rahul admitted that he got confused while facing Mitchell Starc as the ball had started to reverse. Apparently, he was in two minds as to whether to take the Australian left-arm seamer on or just play him cautiously and take the innings deep.

"The World Cup final against Australia, I was stuck in the moment, whether to take down Starc or just play him as it was reversing, bowling in tough angle – in that confusing I ended up nicking it," said Rahul.

Rahul confessed that had he batted deep, he would have surely made a 30-40 run difference, and perhaps the World Cup could have been in India’s kit.

"If I could have played till the end, it could have been 30-40 more runs & probably World Cup in our hands – that is what I regret," he added.

After India finished with 250 runs, Australian opener Travis Head stole the prized trophy single-handedly with 137 run innings at the top.
