Tilak Varma’s brilliant half-century was the highlight of India’s thrilling two-wicket victory over England in the second T20I on Saturday. His outstanding knock helped India recover from a tough position, especially after the top-order collapsed under pressure from England's pacers. This win gave India a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, putting them in a strong position to seal the series.
With just six runs needed from the final six balls and tailender Ravi Bishnoi at the other end, Tilak kept his cool and finished the match in style. He flicked a delivery from Jamie Overton for two runs, followed by a crisp boundary through the deep extra-cover region to take India across the line.
Tilak Varma Admits The Pressure During The Chase
After being named Player of the Match for his 72-run innings, Tilak admitted he felt the pressure during the chase. But what caught everyone’s attention was a light-hearted conversation he had with Arshdeep Singh, who had walked in at No. 9 during the crucial phase. In a chat with Star Sports, he said,
"Actually, I was under a lot of pressure. Arshdeep was saying, 'I will hit it. I will hit it. I have to give a single.' So, I thought, on this wicket, Archer can't get you out," Varma told Star Sports after the match. "On this wicket, Adil Rashid will because his ball was moving a lot. I knew that Arshdeep would try to hit the spinner. I said, 'No, bhai.'
"If Arshdeep wanted to play, he should play Archer. He said he wouldn't play Archer, so I said, 'Okay, I will play.' I told him to be ready with his defence. 'Whether you get a bouncer or not, you just have to stop him. If you see him behind, bend down.' So, I don't know what he did. He said, 'If I get a bouncer, I will hit him from above.' He said a lot of things. But whatever happened, I am happy that he got a boundary off Archer."
Throughout the chase, Tilak’s skillful batting was on full display. He remained unbeaten on 72 off 55 balls, hitting four boundaries and five sixes. Tilak made excellent use of the pace of England’s bowlers, picking his moments to strike and guiding India home with a well-timed drive to seal the win with four balls to spare.
