On January 25, Tilak Varma achieved a historic feat by breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs in T20Is without getting dismissed, while also playing a crucial role in India's thrilling two-wicket win over England in Chennai.

Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 72 runs off 55 balls were not just a match-winning performance, but also a world record. His knock helped India chase down a target of 166, ensuring a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. Along the way, Tilak broke the previous record held by New Zealand’s Mark Chapman, who had scored 271 runs without being dismissed in T20Is.

But Tilak didn’t stop there. His 72-run innings pushed his career total in T20Is to an extraordinary 318 runs without losing his wicket. This puts him ahead of India’s cricketing legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Tilak Varma Impresses With His Bat

Before this record-breaking performance, Tilak had already impressed in his previous three T20I innings, scoring 19*, 120*, and 107* runs. In Chennai, his 72 not out included four boundaries and five sixes, showing his ability to dominate both pace and spin bowling.

Despite pressure from England’s bowlers, including the dangerous Jofra Archer, Tilak kept his cool and made sure India stayed on track. Archer, who has been in great form, ended up conceding 60 runs in his four overs, with Tilak being his main tormentor.

It wasn’t an easy chase for India. The team’s middle order was put under pressure early on, with key players like Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav getting out cheaply. Abhishek Sharma did provide a solid start, but wickets fell at regular intervals, leaving India in a tense situation.

Tilak, however, kept his composure and guided India toward the target. He was well-supported by Washington Sundar, and the two added 38 crucial runs for the sixth wicket. With just six runs needed off the last over, Tilak sealed the game with a boundary off the second ball, bringing India home in a dramatic finish.
