Tilak Varma recently ignited a controversy when he liked an Instagram reel which mentioned him as the greatest No. 3 batter to ever play for India. However, fans took objection over his social media activity, alleging that the youngster took a direct aim at Virat Kohli, India’s successful no.3 batter who is going through a lean patch.

The 22-year-old batter from Hyderabad, Tilak Varma, wreaked havoc in the 2nd T20I against England that took place in Chennai on January 25. Coming to bat at no.3, Varma played a match-winning knock of 72 off 55 balls to lift India to a nail-biting 2-wicket victory.

He was awarded Player of the Match for single-handedly guiding India to a victory in a challenging situation.

Tilak Varma's social media activity causes uproar

Meanwhile, Tilak Varma fans went gaga over his extraordinary knock. A few fan pages made reels on the batter and named him ‘the greatest to play at no.3 for India.’

However, Varma liked that particular reel, which mentioned him as the greatest no.3 batter. Fans on social media took objection to this and called out the 22-year-old for allegedly taking a dig at superstar Indian cricketer Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli has been a mainstay at no.3 for India in the white-ball format for the last decade. He has amassed thousands of runs and achieved a number of milestones as a no.3 batter. Hence, fans have alleged that Tilak Varma tried to undermine Kohli’s achievements by labelling himself as the greatest no.3 batter.

Tilak surpasses Virat Kohli in unique T20I record

January 25 marked a historic day for Indian cricket as young sensation Tilak Varma rewrote the record books with his unbeaten 72-run knock against England in Chennai. With this innings, Tilak surpassed Virat Kohli’s milestone to become the player with the most runs in T20Is without being dismissed, achieving an extraordinary total of 318 runs. Tilak’s composed and match-winning effort came in a tense chase of 166, guiding India to a thrilling two-wicket victory and a commanding 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.
