'I Think It's A Good Move'- Sanjay Manjrekar On MI Naming Hardik Pandya IPL Captain

Ever since the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) announced Hardik Pandya as their new captain, the backlash from fans has been unprecedented; they believe former skipper Rohit Sharma has not been given his due, having helped the club win a record five T20 titles.

Pandya joined MI back on the day of IPL 2024 retention, moving away from Gujarat Titans, who, under the all-rounder, won the title in 2022, and then came runners-up this year.

While many current and former players have expressed their discontent behind Sharma's removal, ex-India international Sanjay Manjrekar has backed MI.

Speaking to Star Sports, Manjrekar stated how Pandya is a proven leader and that fans should move ahead from Sharma and think rationally about the franchise's future.

Here's what Manjrekar said

"One should not be thinking sentimentally or emotionally about Rohit Sharma. I think it’s a good move as Hardik Pandya is a proven leader and has had a great run. So, he is your in-form T20 captain and player. Rohit has been around for a long time. So, it makes a lot of cricketing sense to have somebody like Hardik. I just hope he doesn’t feel the pressure of how the transfer happened and Mumbai Indians backing him so much."

Interestingly, Pandya's first four IPL titles came with MI under Sharma's leadership between 2013 and 2020.

The dashing all-rounder is also gunning for India's T20I captaincy, with Sharma's fate uncertain.
