The lack of ICC titles has been India's problem since 2013, which has seen them perform exceedingly well under both former captain Virat Kohli and current skipper Rohit Sharma in bilaterals.

Since Sharma took over, India has failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup 2022 and ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and also lost the ICC WTC Final 2023, which has seemingly raised doubts about his captaincy skills, and also on the capabilities of the support staff, which include head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.

Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disappointment over Sharma's tenure.  Speaking to The Indian Express, Gavaskar, who turns 74 today, also stated that accountability should be asked from Rathour and Co.

Here's what Gavaskar said

"I expected more from him (Rohit). In India it is different, but when you do well overseas that is really the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing. Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL, hundreds of matches as captain, with a mix of best IPL players not being able to get to the finals has been disappointing."

"If the batters are making the same mistakes over and over again, you need to ask what has happened with your technique. How have you tried to improve the batter? Have you tried to tell him, maybe take a different guard? Don’t take a leg-stump guard, take a middle and off-stump guard."

Gavaskar also opened up about how no current batsmen reach out to him for advice, unlike the players of the past.

"No, no one has come. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman regularly came to me. And they would approach me with a specific problem and you could tell them something which you had observed."

India's next assignment under Sharma will be the two-Test and 3-ODI series against West Indies beginning July 12, which will be followed by a five-T20I series, where Hardik Pandya will captain.
