The hard yards in modern-day cricket can be gruelling and with the rise of T20 franchise cricket, players have often been overburdened, cutting short the careers of several players.

South Africa's Quinton de Kock is one such player who has already announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) following the completion of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The southpaw has shown no signs of fatigue or lack of form in the tournament, hammering away four centuries already and topping the run-getters chart with 550.

In a chat with ESPNCricinfo, de Kock reaffirmed his decision to retire after the global showpiece, however, stated that a return in the future is always a possibility.

Here's what QDK said

“I'm set on my decision. It’s the end of my 50-over career. There have been one or two words said to me about it but I don’t think it’s going to happen. At this point, I don’t foresee it happening. But, you never know. Strange things happen in life. It could be a possibility but I don’t think so."

"There are some good youngsters coming through anyway who will probably take my space as soon as I leave here and they will have to deal with national duties and that’s that. I don’t think I will be coming through, but you never know."

The South African opener already retired from Tests back in 2012, having featured in 54 red-ball matches, scoring 3,300 runs with six tons and 27 half-centuries.

De Kock still has as many as three matches remaining, if the Proteas qualify for the final of the World Cup 2023, or else will finish his career with 155 ODIs under his belt, with the semi-final being his last outing in the green and gold.
