[Watch] When Sri Lanka Did Not 'Timed Out' Taijul Islam In ODI Against Bangladesh

Following Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan's decision to appeal for a 'timed out' dismissal against Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews last evening in Delhi during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter, the talk about the spirit of the game has once again reignited.

Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be dismissed 'Time Out' after the player failed to face a delivery within the stipulated two minutes time between dismissals.

With this new precedent, all eyes will be on watches after every wicket, inviting even more scrutiny, given how there are several unspoken norms between teams.

In a resurfaced viral clip, Sri Lanka could be seen upholding the spirit of the game against Bangladesh during an ODI match in 2019, played in Colombo. In the said clip, batter Taijul Islam could be seen making his way to the ground, however, after crossing the ropes, rushed back towards the dressing room, after realising that he did not wear his crotch guard.

Sri Lankan players could not control their amusement and laughed upon seeing Taijul's silly mistake.

This incident took place in the third ODI,  where ironically Angelo Mathews slammed a stellar 87, and helped Sri Lanka post a mammoth 294.

Bangladesh, in reply, collapsed and managed just 172 runs, losing the encounter by 122 runs, and handing Sri Lanka a 3-0 ODI clean sweep. Interestingly, Islam scored a quick-fire 39 off 28, laced with five fours and one six.
