Shashank Singh got his first crack at IPL captaincy on Sunday, May 18 when he led the Punjab Kings franchise in the second half of the match against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. Defending 220 runs for a win, Shashank’s tactical acumen came to the fore as Kings kept Rajasthan 10 runs within their target.
It is worth noting that he was asked to step in as captain at the halfway stage after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer subbed himself out of the game owing to a finger injury. Here, we take a look back at Shashank Singh’s old interview from last year, where he first opened up about his ambitions of a possible captaincy gig.
Shashank Singh on possible PBKS captaincy
After getting retained by the Punjab Kings franchise last year, Shashank Singh was asked if he would accept captaincy responsibility if he was ever offered the role. The cricketer responded that while he does not know about his chances of being considered, he would gladly accept it.
Shashank added that he has been already captaining in DY Patil T20 tournament for five years, and he has the ability of leading and winning a championship. While speaking with CNN-News18 Cricketnext, he said:
“Honestly, I don’t know much about it (chances of being included in the PBKS leadership group). I have been leading in the DY Patil T20 tournament for five years and touchwood, I’m doing good so far. Even for Chhattisgarh, if the management considers me capable of leading the side, I will accept it happily. I feel that I have the ability to lead a side and win a championship. Similarly, if Punjab Kings want to try me as captain, I will definitely grab that opportunity with both hands and make proper use of it. I will be grateful but not expecting anything.”
Shashank Singh bludgeoned 59 unbeaten runs from 30 balls against Rajasthan Royals before he took over captaincy from Shreyas Iyer for the Rajasthan Royals run-chase.
The outcome helped Punjab Kings qualify for the playoffs, their first in 11 years, joining Gujarat Titans and RCB in the process. They will now face Delhi Capitals on Saturday, May 24 in Jaipur.
