India’s forgotten talent, Prithvi Shaw, has made a strong statement with the bat, scoring a century on his debut for Maharashtra in the prestigious Buchi Babu Trophy. He achieved the feat at the IC Gurunanak College Ground in Chennai and recalled his special connection with the city.

Once considered India’s next big batting star after his dream Test debut century in 2018, the 25-year-old’s career has been derailed by inconsistency, disciplinary issues, and fitness concerns.

Earlier this year, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) dropped him from their Ranji squad, pushing Shaw to seek a non-objection certificate to move to Maharashtra in search of a fresh beginning.

Prithvi Shaw Overjoyed To Score Runs In Chennai

In his first game for Maharashtra, Prithvi Shaw faced Chhattisgarh at the IC Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai and struck 111 off 141 balls, giving his new team a fighting chance as Maharashtra managed 217 in reply to Chhattisgarh’s 252.

For Shaw, this innings is more than just runs; it represents a potential career revival. And the fact that the impactful inning came in the city of Chennai even made it more special.

In a video released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on social media, Shaw revealed that Chennai has always been very close to his heart after he first set foot in the city in IPL 2019.

"It's obviously hot in Chennai, but it really feels great because I've always scored some runs over here. I think Chennai is quite special for me. First experience playing in Chennai was during IPL 2019 I think. We played at obviously Chepauk. Really good experience," Shaw said.

Not only that, Shaw expressed that he wants to continue piling up as many runs as possible for Maharashtra, as the team has given him a shot at revival.

"I think its a really good experience [playing in Buchi Babu]. A great tournament. Before the Ranji season, it happens. I just played my first game and it's a good experience because you get a very good practice before the Ranji season starts. This is my first game for Maharashtra, scoring a hundred feels really special. I hope this continues till Ranji Trophy and upcoming matches," he added.

Shaw’s Proximity With Gaikwad Could Earn Him A Shot At CSK

Interestingly, Maharashtra’s domestic team is led by CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Therefore, Prithvi Shaw's rapport with Gaikwad may provide him with a chance of being hired by CSK in the coming future.

It's worth mentioning that Shaw remained unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction, bringing his seven-year spell with Delhi Capitals to a close. The rejection was a huge setback, considering that IPL exposure tends to have an enormous influence on national selection.

However, with his gritty hundred for Maharashtra, Shaw has shown that he still has the hunger and ability to bounce back.
