Questions raised on Suryakumar Yadav [Source:@Akshatgoel1408/X.com]
Suryakumar Yadav is going through a tough phase, and India is beginning to feel the pressure of his long-running batting slump. Robin Uthappa has voiced concerns, saying Yadav’s batting form might soon affect his captaincy on the field.
Surya has been a shadow of his former self for more than a year now. What makes the situation more worrying is that this dip in form has come at a time when he is also leading the Indian T20I side, adding extra weight to every performance.
Robin Uthappa asks serious questions to Suryakumar Yadav
Ever since India lifted the T20 World Cup last year, Suryakumar Yadav’s numbers have fallen sharply. He has scored just 431 runs in 29 innings, averaging only 18.73, with just two half-centuries.
India have continued to win matches under his leadership, but his personal form has consistently dipped.
Meanwhile, after Yadav’s failure in the second T20I against South Africa, former cricketer Robin Uthappa warned that continuous failures could erode Surya’s confidence as a leader, too.
"In the last game, right, in the post-match, I said, as long as he's winning, it's not going to show up. But if this happens, like, what happened today? It happens not three or four times, it's gonna impact even how he leads on inside the field," Uthappa said on JioHotstar show.
He pointed out that for now, Suryakumar Yadav is able to separate his own poor form from his captaincy because the team has been performing well as a unit. But this balance, Uthappa believes, can break quickly.
“His confidence is going to be dainty. Right now, he’s able to separate the two because the team is winning, and he’s pulling off some great moments on the field. But if a couple more losses like this happen, it will start to taint his confidence in making the right kind of decisions on the field as well. And you don't want that to happen," he added.
Against South Africa, Suryakumar failed again, scoring just five runs off Marco Jansen before walking back in disappointment. That dismissal further intensified the concern around his mindset and shot selection.
Suryakumar Yadav has seen a decline post captaincy
Since assuming captaincy of India’s T20I team, Suryakumar Yadav has seen his form dip dramatically. In 36 games, he has scored 731 runs with 4 fifties and a hundred.
In the last 20 T20Is, Yadav has managed to accumulate just 227 runs at 13.35 average and 119.47 strike rate. Needless to say, his captaincy has retained his spot in the playing XI for now.
But with the T20 World Cup 2026 just a month away, India needs to fix whatever is wrong with Suryakumar Yadav.
