The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has been in the spotlight after nine players were left out of this year's auction based on findings from an extensive 900-page investigation report. Alex Marshall, the independent chair of the Bangladesh Cricket Board's newly formed Integrity Unit, confirmed that the report prepared by a three-member committee was the reason he made recommended to keep the players out of the upcoming season.
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with several cricketers, demanding that the board should make public evidence of wrongdoing.
Marshall defended the decision and stated that these individuals were not 'banned' from cricket but simply not invited to this edition of the BPL as a precautionary measure.
"I have given advice to the governing council, based on reading the 900-page report, that some people should not be invited to this edition of the BPL. Some are players, some are not. I've given that advice to try and prevent problems happening. Those people are not banned from cricket. They're just not invited to this event." Marshall said.
Evidence to be released only after due process
Marshall made it clear that no names or case details will be disclosed until the ongoing 'live investigation' concludes. He emphasized that full transparency will follow, but only after formal proceedings are completed.
“I’ll only give details of the case if and when they either plead guilty to breaches of the code or a tribunal has found them guilty,” he said. “Then the decision is published online so everyone can see the full detail.”
It is important to mention that Marshall also revealed that he is in discussions with Bangladesh authorities to introduce criminal laws specifically targeting corruption in sport.
“I hope in the next few months to work with the authorities in Bangladesh, who I hope will introduce criminal legislation that would indeed make people who did what you’re describing criminal,” he said.
Despite the controversy, preparations for the tournament continue. The organizers have confirmed that the 12th edition of the BPL will run from December 26, 2025, to January 23, 2026.
