David Warner raises concerns for India [Source: @davidwarner31/Instagram & @ICC/X]
Had he been part of India’s squad for Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, former Australia batter David Warner would’ve been “nervous”. Why? Because of the embarrassing manner in which India got whitewashed in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand.
Working as a commentator for Fox Sports during the ongoing first Australia-Pakistan ODI in Melbourne, Warner aired his views around the recent struggles of Indian batters at home. In addition to the lack of runs, Indian batters also appear to be short on confidence following a historic drubbing.
In such a situation and with such a mindset, they will find themselves facing the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon in the middle of the Optus Stadium in less than three weeks.
“It [New Zealand whitewashing India] helps the Australian guys. They’re coming out here after being beaten at home 3-0 for five Tests against the Australian boys, [who have] three world-class quicks and a world-class spin bowler, and I’d be nervous if I’m in that batting order. I would be nervous,” Warner said.
David Warner Makes A Lot Of Sense
If the current form is considered as a solid criterion, one has no option but to agree with Warner. Getting whitewashed for the first time in a three-match series at home, India have more questions than answers at the moment.
With captain Rohit Sharma set to miss at least the first Test in Perth and the team already having opted out of a warm-up match, Indian batters will have to turn the tables in a significant manner if they’re to avoid yet another batting collapse in the last month or so.
It is noteworthy that India were bundled out for 36 in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 in spite of playing a full-fledged three-day practice match against Australia A.
Australia, on the other hand, wouldn’t mind all that their Trans-Tasman neighbours have done to dent the Indian cricket team. With the series opening up the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 in an unprecedented manner, the Aussies have immense to gain from defeating India in a Test series for the first time in the last decade.
