Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary believes that the newly appointed captain of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya, will face a much ‘louder’ booing at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Manoj Tiwary warns Hardik Pandya

Manoj Tiwary's remark follows the incident at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, where Hardik Pandya faced booing during Mumbai Indians' inaugural match in IPL 2024 against his former side, the Gujarat Titans.

Moreover, Hardik Pandya faced not only booing but also verbal abuse and casteist remarks from fans, with a video of the incident going viral during the match, ensuring it remained a headline.

According to speculations, fans have directed such attacks towards Hardik Pandya ever since he assumed the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians, replacing the five-time IPL title-winning captain Rohit Sharma.

"You have to see how he gets welcomed here in Mumbai, because I think he is going to get booed a bit louder here, because as a fan, Mumbai fan or a Rohit Sharma fan, nobody expected that captaincy will be given to Hardik," Tiwary was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Manoj Tiwary also chimed in, saying he wasn't quite sure why Rohit had to pass the captaincy torch to Hardik, especially given his stellar track record leading the team. However, he was dead certain that fans just couldn't wrap their heads around that decision.

“And despite Rohit giving five trophies to Mumbai Indians, he has to lose the captaincy. I don't know what are the reasons but I think it has not gone down well with the fans," Tiwary added.

The Mumbai Indians are set to take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their second match of the season at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, March 27th.
