In England’s cricket history, Graham Thorpe’s sudden death will be a shocking chapter, as he was one of the most gifted players of the nation. After his death, some shocking claims by his wife have stirred the nation.
Recently, his wife, Amanda Thorpe, made some massive claims. In a stunning revelation, she said he might still be alive today if he’d received stronger support.
Amanda Thorpe ignites controversy with a big revelation
Over the years, English cricket has produced some gems, but a talent like Graham Thorpe is still rare. The technically gifted batter was a gem, but his death remained the biggest tragedy for the cricket world. After being axed from his ECB coaching role, he slipped into a brutal battle with depression, a fight that ended in devastating tragedy last year.
After his death, his wife, Amanda Thorpe, made some explosive claims about the board. Recently speaking to TalkSPORT, she claimed the English great might still be alive today if the higher authorities had shown stronger support when he needed it most.
“It is really clear to me that he would still be alive if he'd had just a bit more of a support framework to lean on during that transition. It would have made all the difference,” she said.
Following his exclusion from England’s coaching role, he slipped into severe depression, and the England Cricket Board stepped in with counselling sessions, medical insurance, and rehab support. But Thorpe’s wife said it didn’t help the player at all.
“We really did ask for help. I knew he needed more than that. And it wasn't forthcoming. As he went through these sessions, it was clear that he wasn't coping. He was getting worse,” she added.
Help arrives too late as Thorpe’s health rapidly declines
After he was sacked, the England Cricket Board approached him for a scouting role for England. While talking about it, Amanda revealed it was far too late, as Thorpe was already gravely ill and in no condition to seize the opportunity.
“It was too late. After the crisis in May he was very ill. He nearly lost his life. He'd had a stroke. We don't know how that affected his brain. The ECB might say they didn't know how ill he was, but the doctors did know. There has to be some connection,” she said.
After being sacked from his role after a heavy Ashes defeat in 2022, Graham Thorpe’s life spiraled into a devastating low. The man who graced 100 Test matches and dazzled a generation ended his life in August 2024, leaving English cricket without one of its brightest ever stars.
