A few years ago, India’s fortress at home felt unbreakable, winning a Test on their turf seemed impossible for any opponent, but since last year, that aura has cracked. After losing the first Test against South Africa, and now in deep trouble in the ongoing second Test.
As South Africa is already in the driver’s seat, Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing harsh criticism. And adding fuel to the fire, Iceland Cricket jumped in with a sharp new dig that instantly grabbed attention.
Iceland Cricket fires off a stinging shot at Gambhir
After Rahul Dravid stepped down as Team India’s head coach last year, Gautam Gambhir succeeded him, and the Indian team witnessed a bizarre turnaround they never expected. India may have won ICC trophy, but their Test form has dropped significantly. Even after a series win against West Indies, the ongoing Test series against South Africa has been a massive disappointment.
Starting the series with a heartbreaking defeat, the Men in Blue are in deep trouble in the ongoing match. With home advantage slipping away, furious fans are turning their guns on head coach Gautam Gambhir, even casting doubts on his future. Amidst this, the Iceland cricket took a sharp jab at Gambhir.
“To all our fans, no, Gautam Gambhir will not be invited to be our new national team coach. That position is already filled, and we won 75% of our matches in 2025,” they wrote on their social media handle.
Is Gambhir’s Test coaching era nearing its final over?
After India lifted the T20 World Cup in June 2024, the official ‘Gambhir Era’ started in July 2024 in Indian cricket. After that, India shone in the limited-over cricket, but their Test struggle has hit a new low. Once the fiercest force of Test cricket, now struggling on their home soil.
After Team India’s bizarre form in the ongoing Test series against South Africa, questions have been raised over Gautam Gambhir’s future as Team India’s head coach in the longest format. The home giants have shockingly dropped four of their last six Tests on Indian soil.
And to make the cracks look even deeper, Team India faced a disappointing whitewash in the Test series against New Zealand. Just not teams struggle as the entire cricket world is even raising doubts over Gambhir’s bold team selection and questionable strategies. Yet despite the growing uproar, the BCCI appears in no rush, with his contract stretching all the way to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
