In August 2024, England cricket lost a gem as former cricketer Graham Thorpe passed away in an accident. Nearly a year later, fresh controversy has erupted as his wife broke her silence with a startling revelation about the circumstances of his death.
An inquest at Surrey Coroner’s Court revealed that his death followed a long struggle with mental health issues. His wife, Amanda Thorpe, said that the former batter had expressed suicidal thoughts long before he died.
Thorpe Sinks Into Severe Depression Early On
In the last August, England cricket bid adieu to a star cricketer a little too early. Graham Thorpe, who represented England on the international stage and wore the Surrey jersey in the domestic season, died after being hit by a train at Esher Railway Station. After his death, Surrey Conrner’s Court’s inquest grabbed the attention.
In the inquest, the court said that the English batter was first diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2018. Thorpe also tried to end his life in 2022. This highlights the seriousness of his silent struggle.
The battle was horrible for the player as his wife made a big revelation in recent times. According to The Times, reflecting on his last days, she said, “The weeks leading up to his death, he told me he doesn’t want to be here anymore. He asked me to help him end his life. He said he wants to go to Switzerland.”
Losing the Coaching Job Deepens His Struggles
The Ashes 2022 was a massive setback for the England cricket team as Australia registered a 4-0 series win against their fierce rival. The tour was a massive setback for Thorpe, too. He was removed from his coaching position after a controversial video surfaced during the Ashes tour in Australia, capturing him smoking a cigar indoors. Reflecting on the fallout, Thorpe’s wife later shared that things might have taken a different turn had he not been on that tour.
“He came back from the tour of Australia in a terrible state. To be sacked after that - I think It was foreseeable that it would be really really hard on him. If he hadn’t been on that tour, then he wouldn’t be dismissed, and that was ultimately what he couldn’t deal with,” she added.
Graham Thorpe represented England in 100 Test matches and scored 6744 runs with 16 centuries. In 82 ODIs, he scored 2380 runs. After his death, another feather is set to be added to his crown. Graham Thorpe will be honoured at The Oval on August 1, his 56th birthday, during the fifth Test between England and India.
