As the batting coach of the Gujarat Titans, the Former India wicketkeeper-batter spent enough time with Shubman Gill, who was leading the side in the IPL. Therefore, Parthiv Patel is convinced that the current Indian captain will be able to handle the job with ease due to his natural leadership skills.

Parthiv Patel impressed by Gill’s leaderships skills

Parthiv Patel worked with Gill during the last Indian Premier League season as both were associated with Gujarat Titans. Gill’s decisive and assertive nature as the team leader impressed Parthiv, the GT batting coach back then. Parthiv feels that it would help Gill fulfil the responsibilities of Indian cricket team captain.

“Gautam (Gambhir) has spent extensive time with him now but what I have seen of him (Gill), he does prepare a lot for all kinds of situations and I have seen over one season, assertiveness of his decisions and he is very sure of what he wants to do."

Parthiv further added that Gill has the assertive nature that is required to be a good leader. While Shubman Gill knows what he wants to do, he also offers flexibility and he does not follow any fixed set of ideas. Parthiv revealed that with the GT, Gill used to be open to suggestions.

“In Shubman’s leadership, there is either “Yes" or “No". There is no place for “May Be". As a leader and captain, you need to have that assertiveness about decisions you take and he definitely has that."

Speaking to PTI, Parthiv added

“He is always open to suggestions. As a leader, he is an inclusive person and that’s what you want in a captain.?”

Parthiv backs BCCI’s decision of making Gill a multi-format captain

Parthiv who is working as media professional currently during India’s Test series against West Indies that BCCI’s decision of fast-tracking Gill into the multi-format leadership would be beneficial for Indian cricket.

“Shubman has shown leadership skills leading Gujarat Titans in the IPL for the past two years, how he led the Test side in England, it is a great decision (to elevate him) and we are moving in the right direction."

Parthiv also believes that burn-out should not be a concern considering Gill’s young age. Gill who is already leading Indian cricket team in Tests and ODI, is expected to become an all-format captain in near future.

Parthiv knows that Gill understands his game and takes his game higher, and this would help the Indian cricket eventually.
