'He Is Going To Be Captain': Aakash Chopra Predicts India's Skipper For T20 World Cup 2024

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra anticipates that Rohit Sharma will continue as the captain of the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024. This expectation follows the recent contract extension of the entire coaching staff, including head coach Rahul Dravid.

Under the leadership of Rohit and Dravid, the Indian team had an impressive run in last year's T20 World Cup, although their journey ended in the semifinals. The duo also led India to the World Test Championship (2023) final where they went down to Australia.

Rohit and Dravid further guided India to a string of successes, notably 10 straight wins in the World Cup 2023 that was recently concluded. Despite their efforts, the team couldn't clinch the title, facing yet another defeat against Australia in the final.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra discussed the implications of Dravid's contract renewal, suggesting it points towards Rohit retaining his role as captain in the T20 World Cup 2024. He reasoned that the decision to extend Dravid's tenure for continuity purposes makes it unlikely for the team to seek a different captain.

"He (Rohit) might go as the captain and I feel he will go now. When you have kept Rahul based on continuity, how will you ask Rohit Sharma to go somewhere else? According to me, Rohit is going to be the captain in the T20 World Cup as well,” said Chopra.

Chopra also commented on Rohit's form, expressing optimism about his performance in the upcoming IPL season. He suggested that a good IPL form would further cement Rohit's position as captain.

Despite a not-so-impressive performance in IPL 2023, where Rohit scored 332 runs in 16 innings, Chopra expects him to play with more freedom in the upcoming season. He also mentioned that Virat Kohli would likely continue playing at the No. 3 position.

"He (Rohit) might go as the captain and I feel he will go now. When you have kept Rahul based on continuity, how will you ask Rohit Sharma to go somewhere else? According to me, Rohit is going to be the captain in the T20 World Cup as well,” added the renowned commentator.

Rohit Sharma had an outstanding performance in World Cup 2023, amassing 597 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 125.94. His aggressive style was a highlight of his gameplay, despite his less-than-stellar run in the IPL 2023.
