Pakistan cricket has always been afflicted by inconsistency, particularly when it comes to their coaching management. Frequent changes in the coaching roles throws the team's stability into disarray and Pakistan cricket team is the best living example of it.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is renowned for his constant hiring and firing of coaches. In the last decade alone, they have acquired some of the big names in world cricket to do the coaching role of the Men In Green. The likes of Mickey Arthur, Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq and Gary Kirsten have come and gone.

The list goes on with Jason Gillespie being the latest victim, who stepped down from his role as head coach of the Pakistan’s Test side recently, in December, 2024.

Aaqib Javed Criticizes PCB's Lack Of Patience With Coaches

With such instability in the coaching management, Pakistan's performance has been highly underwhelming in the recent ICC tournaments. Current Interim Head Coach Aaqib Javed has also been critical about PCB’s mismanagement with national team's coaches.

Aaqib has never shied away and called out the incompetence of the board on providing a long rope to the management which plays a pivotal role in the overall growth of the team. In a recent interview, Aaqib once again blamed constant management changes as one of the main reasons behind Pakistan’s recent jeopardy.

Gillespie Calls Out Aaqib's Double Standards

However, on the contrary, Gillespie, who resigned from his Test coaching roles due to mismanagement and lack of communication with the board, took a strong dig at Aaqib’s stance. The former Australian cricketer took to his Instagram handle and posted a story, exposing Aaqib’s hypocrisy on his stance, while he was the one who was against Gillespie’s appointment as all-formats coach alongside the then white-ball coach Gary Kirsten.

“This is hilarious. Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and behind the scenes campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown,” Gillespie quoted, reacting to Aqib's recent comments on constant management changes.

Gillespie’s frustration clearly highlights the issues that foreign coaches have faced while working with the PCB. Besides, if people like Aaqib are there, who actively take part in the same system they condemn, Pakistan cricket will only suffer.

On the broader issue of instability in the coaching roles, Gillespie's remarks serve as a reminder that unless the board follows a particular way to deal with acquiring new coaches and provide them with long-term goals, there will be more setbacks on the way for Pakistan cricket and they will continue to be in a bad state with uncertainty.
