Pakistan’s dry run in the cricket persisted as they ended their Champions Trophy campaign in the group stage. After the forgettable exit from the marquee event, the ‘Men in Green’ are all set to move forward to their upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.

After the horrible outing in the Champions Trophy, the team faced a lot of criticism regarding their team selection. Before stepping into the T20I series, they went through some major changes, and Pakistan coach Aqib Javed addressed the issue.

Aqib Javed On The Major Changes

Before stepping into the upcoming five-match T20I series, they have undergone some major changes and named a fresh squad. Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam have been excluded from the T20I squad, and Shaheeh Afridi is missing out on the entire limited over schedule. While announcing the squad, the interim head coach shared insights on the bold selections, hinting at a new direction for the team.

“It can never be a permanent decision just because a cross has been placed here. Right now, we feel the need to introduce a younger group of players and change our style of play and mindset. Many teams have separated their T20I squads by 80-90%. However, I understand that one or two players from the existing setup will still be needed,” he said.

On Saim Ayub And Fakar Zaman’s Return And Shaheen’s Absence

Before stepping into the Champions Trophy, Pakistan faced a huge setback when Saim Ayub was ruled out from the tournament. But that was not the end, as Fakhar Zaman was ruled out in the middle of the tournament. That added an extra prresser to the side. Their return brings a boost to the squad, and Aqib Javed has weighed on the impact.

“If you look at this squad, once Saim and Fakhar return fully fit, it will form a really strong unit. The goal is to keep a core group of 24-25 players together so that they don’t fall out of the system before the Asia Cup and World Cup, ensuring they approach these tournaments with a set mindset.” he said.

In the Champions Trophy, Pakistan’s star bowler, Shaheen Afridi, was seen struggling with his form. In two matches, he secured only 2 scalps. As the ‘Men in Green’ is stepping into the limited over series, Afridi has lost his place in the ODI squad.  Javed has explained this.

“You see, at times in ODI cricket, we assess how effective a player is based on the team's demands and requirements. If a player doesn't fulfill those, it becomes a concern,” he said.

“But on the other hand, if you look at players like Haris or Shaheen, I still believe they are good bowlers in T20 cricket and can deliver better results for the team. Now, it's not as if Shaheen will play only T20 cricket for the rest of his life and nothing else. However, as selectors, it is our responsibility to make the right decisions at the right time,” he added.

Javed’s Take On Usama Mir’s Exclusion

In recent times, Usama Mir's exclusion stirred up controversy. The team management preferred Azam Khan and Khushdil Shah, depending on their franchise league performances. After this move, the management faced backlash. While addressing the issue, Pakistan’s head coach  justified the reason behind this.

“Every team usually includes seven batsmen, which also includes all-rounders, and the remaining four players are bowlers—typically three fast bowlers and one spinner. Similarly, when forming a T20 team, you need all-rounders.” Javed said.

“Usama Mir’s exclusion was primarily due to fitness concerns. We had discussions with him and met him regarding this issue. When making a comeback, you need to leave no room for doubt. For example, we included Sufiyan Muqeem in the T20 squad because he is a left-arm wrist spinner, providing a different angle. Alongside him, we have Abrar Ahmed, who is a mystery spinner and has been performing exceptionally well,” he added.

After the Champions Trophy horror, Pakistan is ready for its next assignment as they are all set to face New Zealand in the upcoming five-match T20I series starting from March 16. After consecutive setbacks, Pakistan will be eyeing a stronger comeback.
