Cricket and records complement each other. But the records are not always meant to be special, it breaks heart too. These moments, though painful, often become unforgettable talking points in the game.

Being timed out is one of cricket’s rare but unfortunate records. But sometimes, the batters found themselves in this trouble. Since the timed out law was introduced, nine batters faced scripted the unwanted record.

What Is 'Time Out' Dismissal?

In the cricket world, there are so many rules but the ‘Time Out’ is a bizarre one. According to the cricket law, a new batter must reach the crease and be ready to face the ball within the stipulated time after a wicket falls.

If he fails to take the crease on the given time, the ‘time out’ rule will be applied where the batter will be given out even without facing a single ball. That will be considered as a ‘diamond’ or ‘platinum’ duck.

Players Dismissed Via Timed Out In Professional Cricket

Some of the players of professional cricket have been victims of this unfortunate way of dismissal. Andrew Jordan, who was representing Eastern Province, was given the timed out in 1987-88. A decade later, Hemulal Yadav etched his name in history as the first officially recorded ‘timed out’ victim in a first-class match for Tripura in 1997-98.

While talking with the manager after the ninth wicket was down, he failed to arrive on the crease and became the first player in professional cricket to be dismissed in this unusual way at that time. Following them, Vasbert Drakes, Andrew Harris, and Ryan Austin also experienced this unusual mode of dismissal.

International Victims Of This Rule

Some of the international stars have also been through the heartbreaking dismissal. In the 2023 ODI World Cup match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Angelo Matthews became the first international player to be timed out. After Sadeera Samarawickrama’s dismissal, Matthews was not ready to face the ball, and he was given timed out.

After that, Ghana player Godfred Bakiweyem became the second international victim. While playing against Sierra Leone, he faced a bizarre dismissal. Pakistan player Saud Shakeel is the fresh addition in the ‘timed out’ dismissal as he faced his unwanted moment in a first-class game against PTV.
