In a recent conversation with The Week, former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was all praise for the young opener, Shubman Gill. Yuvraj highlighted Gill's incredible work ethic from a young age and posited that Gill could be poised to become the standout cricketer of his generation.

The prodigious opener has caught the attention of cricket fans and experts alike with his astounding performance in ODIs throughout 2023. Tallying an impressive 1230 runs from just 20 innings at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03, Gill has showcased his brilliance in the 50-over format.

His record-breaking performance at the Asia Cup 2023 further solidified his position, as he became the first cricketer to cross the 1000-run mark in ODIs that year and notched up over five international centuries.

Yuvraj Singh lauds Shubman Gill's work ethic

Yuvraj remarked on Gill's determination, suggesting that the 24-year-old's dedication has always been evident, even from his teenage years. 

He stated that the youngster's commitment level to the sport is about four times more than his peers. The former Indian all-rounder went on to say that based on his interactions with the young star, Gill has all the makings to be the defining player of this era.

"Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. The guy works hard. Since he was 19-20, his attitude has always been like that. He works four times harder than a normal guy since he was a kid. Whatever I have worked with him, he can be the player of this era,” said Yuvraj.

Further highlighting Gill's adaptability in international circuits, Yuvraj predicted a bright future for him in challenging terrains like Australia, South Africa, and England. He recalled the prodigious talent's commendable performance on his debut Australian tour, where he managed a 91-run knock in the famous Gabba Test match, followed by two half-centuries.

"He (Gill) scored 91 in a Test match which India won. He scored two fifties as well on his first tour to Australia which I don't know how many players have done. I am sure he will score runs in Australia, South Africa as well as England," added the former southpaw.
