Shubman Gill in action against Australia in Indore (x.com)
Shubman Gill soared past former South African batsman Hashim Amla and Pakistan great Babar Azam for all-time ODI record with his Indore masterclass against Australia. Fresh from his match-winning 74 in Mohali, the Indian opener pumped out another century to lay out a concrete foundation for his side in their three-match series.
After losing opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad in the fourth over of the innings, Gill formed a colossal 200-run stand with number three Shreyas Iyer, who himself charted up an imperial ton at the Holkar surface.
Shubman Gill tops Amla and Babar for ODI record
Shubman Gill made his international debut with a series in New Zealand back in January 2019. Ever since his induction into the national side, the Punjab-based batting prodigy has featured in 35 ODIs for the ‘Men in Blue’. Serving his nation as an opener in nearly all his ODI appearances, the cricketer has so far minted over 1,900 runs at a prolific average of above 68 at the moment.
Gill’s century in Indore against Australia made him the highest run-aggregator of ODI history after featuring in the format’s first 35 innings. His sensational hundred, the sixth of his glittering career, took him past former South African batsman Hashim Amla’s ODI accumulation from his initial 35 batting appearances. Current Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who racked up 1,758 runs in his first 35 knocks, also slipped to number three in the all-time list courtesy of Gill’s batting blitzkrieg.
List of batters with most ODI runs after first 35 innings:
Batsmen | Runs after first 35 ODI innings |
---|---|
Shubman Gill | 1,914* |
Hashim Amla | 1,844 |
Babar Azam | 1,758 |
Shubman Gill is one of the star Indian attractions for the forthcoming 2023 World Cup in India, where he will be seen opening the innings alongside regular skipper Rohit Sharma.
