Shubman Gill’s penchant for big runs paid off yet again as the Indian opener doused Australia’s attack with a sublime 104 in Indore. In doing so, the cricketer notched up his sixth ODI century and registered his second successive fifty-plus score in this short three-match series against the visitors.

Gill knocked over Hashim Amla and Babar Azam for a huge ODI record through the course of his knock, and inched closer to all-time great Sachin Tendulkar for another impending 50-overs international milestone.

Shubman Gill inches closer to Tendulkar for this record

Shubman Gill listed 104 scintillating runs from just 97 balls at the top of the order for India in their second ODI meeting of the ongoing series against Australia. The innings marked his sixth ODI ton, and the ninth overall of his international career across formats.

Moreover, the Punjab-based batting prodigy notched up eight of those centuries while opening the innings for Team India. Doing so at the age of just above 24, Gill inched closer to Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Indian record by the time the ‘Master Blaster’ had turned 25.

As an Indian opener, Tendulkar listed 14 international hundreds before the age of 25. Gill, who is already second on the all-time Indian list with eight tons at the age of just 24, might well inch closer or even dethrone the former batter for a national record within the coming months.

In addition to his sixth ODI century, Shubman Gill also soared past former South African batsman Hashim Amla’s tally in terms of most runs scored after the first 35 innings in 50-overs internationals. Gill has so far minted 1,917 runs at an average of nearly 66, i.e., 73 runs more than previous record-holder Amla.
