Vishal Jayswal with Virat Kohli [Source: @Ayush_Singh27/X]
Virat Kohli had a glorious return to Vijay Hazare Trophy after 16 years as he knocked down the domestic walls with a magnificent century for Delhi against Andhra and a 77 against Gujarat. However, one man stood in the way of Virat Kohli’s glory of having two back-to-back centuries, Vishal Jayswal.
The leg-spinner from Gujarat haunted Kohli with his troubling left-arm orthodox bowling. He dismissed Virat with a quality delivery as the batter attempted a drive while dancing down the track. However, Kohli missed it wide, and Urvil Patel behind the stumps was quick to send the Delhi boy back into the pavilion.
What compliment did Virat Kohli give to Vishal Jayswal?
Speaking after the match to Hindustan Times, the 27-year-old elaborated on his dream-come-true moment when Virat Kohli himself complimented Jayswal after the dismissal.
"After the match, I didn't get to speak to Virat Kohli much. But he did say, 'Well bowled.' He did say that I have been doing well, and he asked me to keep it up," Jayswal told Hindustan Times.
The compliment must have rang in Jayswal’s ears that whole day as he revealed it was a surprise for him to dismiss the RCB legend. He didn’t intend to get him out and was only trying to keep things tight.
"My plan was not to have Kohli come out of the crease. My plan was to bowl stump-to-stump as he's such a big player. I didn't want to give him much room. I knew he would make one mistake at some stage or another, so I just held my line. That was the plan; there was nothing else," Jayswal said.
Jayswal reveals strategy behind Kohli's dismissal
Jayswal revealed that his focus was solely on making Kohli impatient and increasing the chance of the batter playing a risky shot, which might put an early end to his stay on the crease.
"He was playing aggressive cricket. He was looking to dominate. So, we had just one plan: to keep bowling tight and not give him runs easily. We knew if he went for a big shot, then our chances would increase of taking his wicket," added the spinner.
Besides Virat Kohli’s wicket, Jayswal was also instrumental in picking Nitish Rana, Arpit Rana and Rishabh Pant as he came on the back of a solid SMAT 2025 tournament. In the ongoing VHT 2025-26t, the spinner is already boasting 5 wickets from his 2 matches with figures of 4/42 from the Delhi clash.
