India registered a rare home loss in the opening Test of the three-match series against New Zealand in Bengaluru. They lost the Test by eight wickets and it was New Zealand's first Test win on Indian soil since 1988. India were bowled out for 46 in the first innings, but delivered a better performance in the second innings with Sarfaraz Khan scoring 150 and Rishabh Pant smashing 99.
However, Pant walked off in pain during New Zealand's first innings and though he batted, he did not keep wickets in the second innings as well. So, to gain more clarity on the wicketkeeper's fitness status, Rohit Sharma was asked about Pant in the post-match press conference and Indian captain mentioned that they want to be extra careful with Pant.
India Want Rishabh Pant To Take Ample Rest
The wicketkeeper batter was out of action for almost 1.5 years after his accident in December 2022. He has made a successful comeback now, but given the surgeries he has gone through, the Indian skipper said that they wanted to give Pant proper Rest and not aggravate his injury ahead of second Test. He also added that Pant was not running comfortably while he was batting and has gone through a lot in the last year or so.
"Pant had a massive operation on his knee. It's better to be careful. When he was batting, he wasn't comfortably running. We need to be extra careful. He has gone through a lot of trauma in the last couple of years, not easy to keep with pain so we needed him to have extra rest before the next Test".
Rishabh Pant made his comeback into the competitive cricket with IPL 2024 and after doing decently there, he played T20 World Cup for India. He made a successful comeback in the Test format with a century against Bangladesh, and is a critical player for India as they now need 5 wins from seven matches to confirm their place in the WTC final.
