India suffered a shocking defeat in the first Test against New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. One of the prime reasons behind India's defeat was the batting line-up's failure in the first innings when they were bundled out for just 46 runs.
Just before the start of the match, Shubman Gill was ruled out due to a stiff neck. Notably, Gill has taken up the number three position for India in Test cricket since the Caribbean Tour in 2023. His absence in this match forced the management to send Virat Kohli at number three, a partially successful move.
Virat Kohli batted at number 3 in Gill's absence
The presence of Shubman Gill at number three gives India solidity, which was tinkered with due to his injury. However, much to the encouragement of the Indian fans, Shubman Gill was seen with the bat in the nets after India's defeat in the first match. His return might provide resilience and dynamism to the Indian middle order in the all-important second Test match.
The Indian skipper has confirmed that Gill is seemingly okay for the next game. In the press conference after the game, Rohit Sharma said, "Shubman Gill seems okay at this point of time,"- when asked about the young batter's fitness.
Shubman Gill's record at number three in Tests
Shubman Gill has played 21 innings at number three for India. He has scored 782 runs in these innings at an average of 43.44, with three centuries and two half-centuries.
India's next assignment against New Zealand will be at the MCA Stadium in Pune on the 24th of October.
