Former West Indian superstar Chris Gayle has expressed his concern over the exclusion of Indian batter Sarfaraz Khan. Despite losing weight and piling up runs in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz didn't get a chance in the Indian side for the past two series.
Chris Gayle Unimpressed By Sarfaraz's Dropping
One of the legendary batters from the West Indian side that dominated the T20 era of the Caribbean team, Christopher Henry Gayle, or better known as Chris Gayle, has been the pioneer of modern cricket. Recently, he was featured in a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, where he provided some interesting answers while making his points.
When asked by Shubhankar about Gayle's favourite player in the Indian side, the 45-year-old named the right-handed Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan for his ability to score continuous runs, as he backed the youngster to take a claim in the Test side.
Gayle was disappointed with the fact that Sarfaraz hadn't gotten many chances despite losing weight, as he believes that this was not an issue at all.
“I mean, he should be in the Test side. He should be in the Test squad at least, you know. Scored a century against England at home, not in the squad. I saw a post a couple of days ago. He lost weight. The weight wasn’t even, nothing was wrong with his weight or anything. He’s just fine. He was still scoring runs," Gayle said on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel.
Gayle Believes Sarfaraz Deserves Proper Chances
He then commented on the fact that Sarfaraz has always scored runs in Test cricket with triple centuries and should get a better chance of playing in the side rather than being dropped, as he hasn't received any opportunity since the last two series, where he sat on the bench against Australia and didn't get to feature in the squad against England.
"The man scored triple centuries in first-class cricket. So if they’re using that against him, that’s sad, you know. They should never use that against him. That youngster should have been a part of the squad 100%. I mean, India have so much talent, man, but give the man a run," he concluded.
As for Sarfaraz, the right-handed batter has featured in six Test matches for India, where he has averaged 37.1, having scored 371 runs, which includes three half-centuries and one century to his name.
Interestingly, Sarfaraz was left out for India's tour of England in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, which ended in a draw, as both sides fought hard till the end to engage in a hard-fought draw, levelling the series 2-2.
