Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has harshly criticised Gautam Gambhir after India’s disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). India faced a heavy defeat, losing the five-match Test series 3-1, which has led to concerns about Gambhir’s future as the Indian cricket team’s head coach.

Gautam Gambhir, who took over as India head coach, has had a rough start. The BGT, where India were defeated 3-1, has only increased doubts about his ability to lead the team in the long run. With the next big challenges like the Champions Trophy approaching, Gambhir’s position as head coach is being questioned more than ever.

Tiwary didn’t hold back in his criticism of Gambhir. He accused Gambhir of not following his own advice and of surrounding himself with people who would never question his decisions.

"Gautam Gambhir is a hypocrite. He doesn't do what he says. The captain (Rohit) is from Mumbai, Abhishek Nayar is from Mumbai. Rohit has been pushed to the forefront. There is no one to speak for Jalaj Saxena. He performs well but keeps quiet. What is the use of a bowling coach? Whatever the coach says, he will agree. Morne Morkel came from Lucknow Super Giants. Abhishek Nayar was at Kolkata Knight Riders with Gambhir and the Indian head coach knows that he will not go against his instructions," shared Tiwary during a conversation with News18 Bangla.

Tiwary, who has played 56 games alongside Gambhir, also spoke about the rumoured tension between Gambhir and Indian captain Rohit Sharma. He suggested that the two may not work well together due to their contrasting personalities.

“How will they work together? Rohit is a World Cup-winning captain while Gambhir led KKR to IPL titles both as a captain and mentor. Gambhir didn't guide KKR to the title single-handedly, as we all performed as a unit. Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine and I, all contributed to the cause. But who took the credit? There is an environment and PR that allows him to take all the credit,” added Tiwary.

Gambhir’s Future in Question

The poor performances, including a failed tour to Australia, India’s first ODI series loss to Sri Lanka in 27 years, and the embarrassing 3-0 defeat to New Zealand, have raised even more questions about Gambhir’s coaching abilities. With the upcoming white-ball series against England and the Champions Trophy, Gambhir’s future as India’s head coach hangs in the balance.
