Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga, a legend in his own right, concluded his glittering competitive career as one of the greatest ever cricketers to have graced the game’s T20 arena. A veteran of several T20 leagues, and 84 T20Is for Sri Lanka, the speedster harvested 390 wickets to retire as the fifth most successful fast bowler in the history of the game’s truncated format.

While Malinga aced his time in IPL during his 122-match journey for the Mumbai Indians, the legendary Sri Lankan pacer also excelled during his brief two-year stint for the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash competition back in 2012 and 2013. Here, we take a look back at one of the finest dismissals ever inflicted by Lasith Malinga in a BBL game.

When Lasith Malinga left Australia’s WC winner clueless

Taking field for the Melbourne Stars at the iconic MCG against Sydney Sixers back in December 2012, Lasith Malinga claimed match-defining figures of 1-18 from his four economical overs. In the penultimate over of his spell, at a time when the game was heading towards a tight finish, Malinga sent down a near unplayable peach to Sydney Sixers’ captain and well-set opener Brad Haddin.

With the Sixers requiring 54 more runs from the remaining four overs, Malinga knocked over Haddin (39 off 28) with a pacey yorker as the Melbourne Stars secured a huge 21-run win at home.

A couple of weeks prior during the same BBL 2012-13 season, Lasith Malinga picked up his career best T20 figures of 6-7 against Perth Scorchers. While the Melbourne Stars failed to qualify for the finals, the former Sri Lankan captain finished the season as its second highest wicket-taker with 13 scalps from just seven matches at an impressive bowling average of 10.69.
