Team India, under the coaching tenure of Gautam Gambhir, recently suffered its second home whitewash in a Test series within the space of the last 12 months. After trouncing West Indies 2-0 at home last month, the Indian cricket team received a 0-2 drubbing at the hands of WTC winners South Africa.
Similarly, the visiting New Zealand team pulverised India 3-0 late last year, thus indicating that the nation’s Test cricket balance is on the decline. Amid India’s latest Test debacles, which also included a 1-3 BGT defeat in Australia, former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has urged Indian cricket fans and media to not overlook another side of Gautam Gambhir’s tenure, that of his white-ball success.
Ashwin shows the side of Gambhir critics are ignoring
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has defended under fire Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir amid all the criticism he has been receiving for Team India’s Test debacles under him. While speaking with former South African captain AB de Villiers on YouTube, Ashwin urged Indian cricket fans to take note of Gambhir’s white-ball legacy, which already includes two silverwares, including the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
The former Indian all-rounder said:
“I think GG, the white-ball coach, has already left a bit of a stamp.”
Seemingly unfazed by India’s Test decline, Ravichandran Ashwin offered fans a glimpse of India’s T20I and ODI future. It is worth noting that under the coaching tenure of Gambhir, Team India has recorded 19 wins and just two defeats in 21 completed T20I games.
Moreover, the Indian head coach was also reportedly instrumental in appointing Suryakumar Yadav as Team India’s T20I captain over fellow suitable candidate like Hardik Pandya.
Their partnership as captain and coach has already yielded an Asia Cup title of 2025 for the Indian cricket team, achieving the same a couple of months ago in the UAE. The two leaders are currently shaping Team India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
