The 27th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 seasoned witnessed a controversial finish at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide on Friday, November 28. In a rain-marred game that was reduced to five-overs-a-side affair, the visiting Sydney Thunder Women’s team was visibly denied a chance of an easy victory after reaching the brink of the finish line.

Chasing 46 for a win in five overs, the play got called off by the two on-field umpires following a drizzle, at a time when Thunder needed just three more runs to win from 13 balls.

Sydney Thunder frustrated by the umpires after controversial finish

The Sydney Thunder Women’s team got robbed off a chance of securing two easy WBBL 2025 points at the Adelaide Oval against the hosts, Adelaide Strikers. In match number 27 of the tournament, ceaseless rains forced the match officials to reduce the game to a five-overs-a-side affair.

Adelaide Strikers batted first and reached 45-2 in five overs, with opening batter and South African international Laura Wolvaardt making 22 of them in 13 balls.

Chasing 46 for a win, young Sydney Thunder opener and captain Phoebe Litchfield got her team off to a flier, blasting 38* in just 15 balls with eight elegant boundaries. Her partner Georgia Voll also whacked five off two as Sydney Thunder raced to 43-0 in 2.5 overs.

However, at a time when they required just three more runs for a win from the remaining 13 balls, a slight drizzle came back to haunt the game, forcing match officials to call off play for the time being. The break turned temporary, as the match was later declared abandoned with both sides sharing a point each.

The two Sydney Thunder openers were visibly left frustrated over the umpire’s hasty call, especially after reaching the brink of a comprehensive win.

Nonetheless, Thunder continues to remain at number seven of the eight-team WBBL 2025 points table with just two wins and four defeats from seven games (1 N/R). A win over Adelaide Strikers at this stage of the tournament would have lifted them a rung to number six on the standings.
